Zanskar, Leh Ladakh and Kargil Tour Itinerary
Day 1
Start with an early drive towards Kargil, passing through the beautiful, lunar landscapes near Lamayuru Monastery, one of Ladakh's oldest and most dramatic monasteries. Stop at the famous Magnetic Hill and the Indus-Zanskar Confluence (Sangam) for photos before reaching Kargil, the second largest town in Ladakh, for the night.
Day 2
Visit the solemn Kargil War Memorial in Drass, dedicating time to reflect on the historical significance and paying homage to the soldiers. Explore the Drass Village, known as the second coldest inhabited place on Earth, for its extreme climate and unique cultural aspects, gaining deep insight into life in this challenging border region.
Day 3
Embark on a long, rugged drive into the remote Zanskar Valley. The route crosses the spectacular Pensi La Pass, which serves as the gateway to Zanskar, offering breathtaking views of the Drang-Drung Glacier. The journey is challenging but incredibly rewarding, leading to Padum, the administrative center of the Zanskar region.
Day 4
Spend the day exploring the rich Buddhist heritage of Zanskar. Visit Karsha Monastery, the largest and most important monastery in Zanskar, perched dramatically on a hillside. Also visit Stongdey Monastery, offering magnificent views of the valley, and interact with the monks to learn about their unique, isolated way of life.
Day 5
Begin the journey back, stopping at the remote Rangdum Monastery, located dramatically on a small hill in the middle of a vast plain. The landscape here is stark and desolate, providing incredible photographic opportunities. Check into the guesthouse or camp in this secluded high-altitude environment for a truly remote experience.
Day 6
Continue the journey out of the Zanskar region. The drive offers changing views of the Pensi La region as you retrace your steps. Arrive back in Kargil for the final night, enjoying the relative comforts of the town after the remote stay in Zanskar, and preparing for the onward journey back to Srinagar/Leh.
Day 7
After breakfast, choose to drive towards Srinagar via the Zojila Pass (seasonal) to conclude the tour in Kashmir, or drive back to Leh for the flight departure. Both routes are incredibly scenic, offering one last panoramic view of the dramatic high-altitude landscapes of the western Himalayas.
