Day 1
Start the journey from Shimla towards the Upper Kinnaur region along the NH5, the old Hindustan-Tibet Road. Sarahan is the first major stop, famous for the magnificent, multi-tiered Bhimakali Temple, a unique example of Himachali architecture. Check into your hotel and explore the complex in the snow (if winter).
Day 2
Continue driving deep into the Sutlej Valley. Kalpa is the highlight, known for its breathtaking, close-up view of the majestic Kinnaur Kailash massif, often heavily snow-covered in winter. Spend the afternoon enjoying the sheer scale of the mountains and the unique, remote atmosphere of this beautiful village.
Day 3
A challenging, dramatic drive that takes you across the Spiti gateway. The route passes through the restricted area near the border and the village of Nako (often frozen). The destination is Tabo, famous for the ancient Tabo Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its preserved murals, providing a warm, cultural escape from the cold.
Day 4
Explore the ancient Tabo Monastery in the morning. Drive to Kaza, the headquarters of Spiti. Visit the high villages of Komic (Asia's highest motorable village) and Langza (famous for its huge Buddha statue), experiencing the raw, frozen, and surreal beauty of the mid-Spiti landscape in winter.
Day 5
Start the long return journey towards the warmer regions. The drive is scenic, offering final views of the spectacular cold-desert mountains. Stop for the night at Nako or a larger town like Rampur (closer to Shimla) to break the long journey, ensuring safety and comfort after the high-altitude stay.
Day 6
Complete the final stretch of the drive back to Shimla. This long journey marks the successful completion of the winter Spiti adventure, allowing time to reflect on the stark, remote beauty of the cold desert before transferring to the railway station or airport for departure.
